Our Lady of the Assumption

Religious heritage Heritage

The Virgin of the Assumption is a carving made by Luis Salvador Carmona in 1749. It can be seen in the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption in Serradilla.

Considered one of Carmona's best works and a benchmark of Extremaduran Baroque, this carving served as a model for the Virgin statue in the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption in Villanueva de la Serena, a work by Sebastián Santos Rojas. The carving was restored by Nieto Pérez in 1994, and was subsequently taken in procession to display the successful restauration. This was a remarkable event as it was one of the few occasions on which the Virgin of Serradilla has been taken in procession.

The piece was commissioned by the Brotherhood of Labradores de Serradilla, this being apparently the only occasion on which a preparatory drawing by Carmona, intended to be examined and approved by the clients before beginning the sculpture, has been preserved. The image, valued by the artist at 3,000 reales de vellón, was declared titular of the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción as well as patron saint of the town, along with the Blessed Cristo de la Victoria.

REMEMBER

In 2022 the carving was selected for participation in the prestigious exhibition Transitus, XXVI edition of The Ages of Man in the Cathedral of Plasencia in light of the uniqueness and value of this work by Luis Salvador Carmona.
