Route 4 - Garganta del Fraile (Friar’s Gorge)
This is a circular route on which the majority of plant species that make up a typical Mediterranean forest can be observed: cork oaks, holm oaks, gall oaks, strawberry trees, durillos, cornicabras, wild olive trees... all these are interspersed and form a rich mosaic with olive groves, pine forests and meadows.
The most notable point on the route is the Garganta del Fraile or Friar´s Waterfall, one of the most striking images of the Monfragüe National Park.
This permanent waterfall has eroded the quartzite for untold years, creating a spectacular cliff that is home to a large population of birds of prey, among which are species like the griffon vulture, the Egyptian vulture, the common kestrel, the eagle owl, the rock thrush and the wheatear.
In addition to a great variety of fauna and flora, this route also features viewpoints, fountains and picnic areas for the enjoyment of visitors.
ROUTE 4 connects with ROUTE 5, about 300 meters from the Garganta del Fraile.
